The MKOMAZI project

In 1989 the Government of Tanzania invited Tony Fitzjohn with The George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust to work with it on habitat restoration and the reintroduction of endangered species.

A rhino sanctuary was constructed and stocked and the captive-breeding program for the African wild dog was established. These were both highly successful resulting in many multiples of African wild dogs been released into the field and with a breeding core of four rhinos from South Africa, now having a population of over thirty. The project was successful enough to warrant the Mkomazi Game Reserve being gazetted into a National Park in 2006.  There is provision for a tourist Rino Sanctuary which has in fact been completed for visits. This sanctuary is very close to Babu’s Camp.
